Madu River Wetlands & Cinnamon Island Trail

Cruise gently through the winding waterways of the Madu River near Balapitiya, surrounded by a maze of mangrove-covered islands, shallow channels and floating herb gardens that constitute one of Sri Lanka’s most ecologically distinctive river environments. The journey includes a stop at the famous cinnamon-growing island, where traditional peelers demonstrate the hand-harvesting process that has made Sri Lanka the world’s source of true cinnamon for over five centuries.

Tour Highlights

  • Mangrove River Safari – The Madu River’s 64 mangrove-covered islands form a labyrinthine waterscape that can only be properly explored by slow boat, with channels so narrow that branches brush the sides of the vessel and the water below revealing flashes of monitor lizards, crabs and fish. The pace is deliberate and contemplative, guided by a boatman who has navigated these channels daily and knows exactly where to pause for the best views of nesting birds and wildlife.
  • Cinnamon Island & Traditional Peeling – True cinnamon – Cinnamomum verum, distinct from the cassia sold as a substitute in most of the world – originated in Sri Lanka and continues to be grown and hand-harvested on small island estates in the Madu River area using techniques unchanged since the Dutch colonial era. The peeling demonstration reveals how the outer bark is removed, the inner layer scraped and the cinnamon rolled into quills by hand – a laborious and skilled process that explains why genuine Ceylon cinnamon commands a significant premium.
  • Local Cultural Encounters – The communities that live on and around the Madu River maintain livelihoods that blend fishing, cinnamon cultivation, community fishing trap management and the riverside temple traditions that have coexisted with the wetland ecosystem for generations. Brief encounters with island residents, arranged respectfully and on their terms, give travellers a glimpse of a way of life that is genuinely shaped by its extraordinary riverine environment.
